Therefore do not be like them. For your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him. In this manner, therefore, pray:
Our Father in heaven,
Hallowed be Your name.
Your kingdom come.
Your will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts,
As we forgive our debtors.
And do not lead us into temptation,
But deliver us from the evil one.
For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
(Matthew 6: 8-13)
The Lords Prayer is the model, the template for prayer that Jesus gave us. First, we must recognize the awesomeness of God. Before saying a word, worship, adore, and thank Him for all He has done. Confess your sins, and forgive those who have wronged you. Pray for his will in your life and the rule of His kingdom in your heart and the hearts of others. Then, having put things in their proper perspective, bring your needs before Him.
Another way to remember the structure of this model prayer is to use the simple acronym, ACTS:
First, I adore God and praise him.
Then I confess my sin.
Next, I remember to give thanks.
Finally, I offer my supplications.
With this model prayer as our guide, we must not fail to “pray without ceasing” (1 Thess. 5:17). As we pray, these essential ingredients of effective prayer will help us make great strides in growing as disciples of Jesus.
