Let me start by saying this, I understand that there are many reasons why someone would want to leave their church. But there are only a small handful of reasons that are right! For instance…
• You have moved away and your church is no longer a reasonable distance from your home.
• You are terminally ill, or maybe you have health issues that prevent you from leaving your home.
• You have a child that is ill, and you need to be with that child 24/7 so he or she can get the proper care.
• One excellent reason could be because the church you attend is no longer preaching Christ! Now that’s an excellent reason and its biblical! Read 1 John 4:1-6
• Or like myself, I was led by The Lord to leave my previous church to attend my current church! I’ll touch on that a little later. Anyway I’m sure there could be many more valid reasons!
So, on with the title “Why I want to leave my church but I won’t!” (FYI, I plead the fifth on whether or not any of the following statements are indeed true!)
My Pastor talks really soft and slow and makes me drowsy, and during service I feel like I just finished eating a turkey dinner! I can’t stop yawning!
But then I think to myself, maybe it’s not the Pastor, maybe it’s just me? Maybe it’s because I only get six to seven hours of sleep a night and spend most of my time at work staring at a computer all day. I’m bloody tired! I suppose in all actuality I would rather have the pastor talk this way so I can clearly understand the message and let God’s Word sink in! Joshua 1:8 (NKJV) tells us “This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.” There are many places throughout the Bible that tells us that we should meditate on God’s word! Here’s our chance to meditate on it!
The teachings don’t always apply to what’s going on in my life and many times the message just doesn’t make me feel all that happy inside!
But then I think to myself it’s not about me, it’s about God’s Word! I’m here at church to study and understand it. The Bible tells us, “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.” – II Timothy 3:16-17 (NKJV) In addition to that, God’s word is like a mirror it gives us a chance to look at ourselves and fix the issues that lie within our hearts and minds and it’s not always going to look good, or feel good! God’s truth may not always make us happy! I appreciate God’s truth!
The worship band isn’t the best in town and the guy on the electric guitar might need to practice a little more! He keeps hitting the wrong note! Oh and that drummer, he keeps hitting the edge of the electronic drum set and causing this constant clicking noise that’s so distracting!
But then I think to myself, can I do any better? Probably not! I have three guitars hanging on my wall collecting dust, because l can’t play a tune on any of them! God bless the worship teams souls for actually using their God given talents and giving up their free time for God’s people and His purpose! The Bible tells us, make a joyful noise to The Lord! And that’s what the worship team does!
Speaking of worship! It drives me nuts when the verses on the screen are slow to change and I can’t keep up with the worship songs! And then there’s that person in the back thats not singing the same song as the rest of us! Now there’s a distraction!
But then I think to myself, why are we here? And I am reminded that we are here to worship our Lord and King, and not all of us have great singing voices! And some might even be a little tone deaf! But you know what? One day soon we will all be in unison, we will sound like a choice choir, and we will know the song! We won’t need to read the words from a screen!
The greeting between worship and the teaching is very awkward! There’s always that one guy who has sweaty palms or that one woman with way too much perfume on. Oh, and I don’t dare ask anybody how they’re doing!
And then I think to myself, would Jesus have these thoughts? He touched a man who was a leper. He spit on the ground and made mud pies for a blind man, and put them on his eyes so that he could see! Jesus listened to those who spoke to Him! So, we need to Just deal with it and do the same! These are our brothers and sisters in Christ! We will be spending eternity with these people! Now go wash your hands before the Pastor gets to the pulpit! Stop thinking about yourself!
I just can’t seem to get connected! I exchange words with several people but I still feel like I don’t belong!
But then I think to myself, if it wasn’t for our connection in Christ I wouldn’t know any of these people! Not only that, but when we are in Christ we become brothers and sisters! How do brothers and sisters act? They love each other, but may not hang out with each other! If we want to connect with others we need to initiate the conversation and invite them in and not wait for them to initiate the conversation! We need to be Christ like! We need to be neighborly!
Somedays I feel like I just want to stay home and skip going to church all together!
But then I think to myself, what’s that going to do for me spiritually? Because I know if I stay home eventually the things of God will just go by the way side. I will backslide into the ways of the past! (Not that that has ever happened, but I could imagine it happening!) And as much as some may agree that you don’t need to attend church to be a Christian, I disagree 100%! To be spiritually healthy you need the teachings of God! You need to fellowship with other believers! You need to be part of the Christian community! You need to be grounded in a church for countability or you will fail!
The Bible tells us, “Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful. And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.”
Here’s the deal, it all comes down to this! No matter what church we attend, it needs to be biblical! The pastor needs to preach Christ, and our bibles need to be opened! Simple as that! And if we’re looking for the perfect church we won’t find it! Because If we do, once we enter that church it will become imperfect! One thing is for sure! We can’t let self get in the way of God’s plan! We can’t let the distractions get in the way of worshiping our Lord and King! We’ve been selected to be children of God! We are the privileged ones! We get to go to church! We get to worship together! We get to fellowship together! We get to be brothers and sisters in Christ! We get to be part of a family that gets to go to Heaven! We get to!
In closing, if you already left the church that you fell in love with, and you left for all the wrong reasons, and you’re not plugged into another church that you’re now falling in love with, stop being stubborn! And get back to it! You will be welcomed with open arms just like the the rich man’s son who went away and spent all his inheritance and was welcomed back by his loving father! You got this! Let’s get back on to the godly path!
Lord God, Heavenly Father,
I lift all those up to you who our struggling with their faith in the church, their insecurities, and their failures in trusting the one true God to get them through it all! If it’s a health issue, I pray that even through the health issues they would be able to overcome! We look to your word, we follow what it says, and we have victory in Your will for our lives! In Jesus’ name, amen!
And then my final closing… Are there issues with my church? or are there issues with my heart? That’s a good question that we must all ask ourselves! For me, it’s all on how I look at it. I feel I am mature enough in my faith to realize, it is what it is! God first, me second! I will change what I can, and accept what I can’t! I won’t be leaving my church for the wrong reasons! I will change my heart! I will follow Jesus!
Being Led by The Lord… I left my first church roughly eight years ago and I was fully invested in it and committed to it! I wasn’t planning on leaving any time soon. But then The Lord led me by an invitation! An invitation that was given by a coworker to go with him to a Wednesday night Bible Study, because my current church didn’t have one. After attending the study I fell in love with God’s Word once I heard it being taught line by line! I was hooked! I fell in love with the Pastor, the people, and the church as a whole! And after awhile it just felt right that this was my church home! So I made the permanent move to New Beginnings Christian Fellowship! I was welcomed with open arms! And I had the sense of being home! The Lord had me where I needed to be! And it still feels like home! I ain’t leavin my church! Amen! Nuff said! God bless your souls!
