“yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death”

The Lord the Shepherd of His People

A Psalm of David.

The Lord is my shepherd;
I shall not want.
2 He makes me to lie down in green pastures;
He leads me beside the still waters.
3 He restores my soul;
He leads me in the paths of righteousness
For His name’s sake.
4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil;
For You are with me;
Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;
You anoint my head with oil;
My cup runs over.
6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
All the days of my life;
And I will dwell in the house of the Lord
Forever. ~ Psalm 23 (NKJV)

This is such an awesome psalm! And before I became a follower of Christ I of course never really understood it. In the movies there would always be some preacher all dressed in black with his white collar speaking in a very low deep voice standing next to the grave of the recently deceased, “yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death” etc… etc… I am sure you get the picture. Anyway… I read this Psalm today and it has much more meaning to me than just something read at a funeral! This psalm is great poetry, and a great read for everyday! A reminder that God does loves us and is all for us!

1 The Lord is my shepherd;
I shall not want.
He makes me to lie down in green pastures;
He leads me beside the still waters.

When we put our faith in Jesus all we need is Him! He is The Living Water, The Bread of Life, He sustains us, we need nothing else, He connects us with God, our Protector in Heaven.

3 He restores my soul;
He leads me in the paths of righteousness
For His name’s sake.

God restores our lost souls, he makes us whole again, He gives us meaning and purpose, He leads us to what is good! By His grace and the blood of Jesus Christ we are healed.

4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil;
For You are with me;
Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.

For every day that goes by we are one more day closer to death, It is inevitable that we will indeed die. But when we walk with the Lord we have no fear of death. We are comforted in knowing that He is with us and we really are just one day closer to spending eternity with Him in Heaven where there will be no more death, no more evil, no more sadness no more pain, It’s going to be so awesome!

5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;
You anoint my head with oil;
My cup runs over.

No matter how difficult it may seem the Lord will provide! And when we give Him our all, He provides abundantly! We are like the honored guest at a huge Banquet! We will not run out of food or drink! We will be full of Joy!

6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
All the days of my life;
And I will dwell in the house of the Lord
Forever.

As children of God we become part of His bigger picture, we start to see more clearly, we see things for what they really are. What had so much meaning before Christ is worthless now. Are focus is changed in the right direction, to the things of Heaven to the things that are good and pleasing to the Lord. We will decrease, He will increase. Not our will but His. We will want to dwell in the house of The Lord forever!

God gives us his Grace even though we don’t deserve it. We are stubborn, but He continues to pursue us. He loves us for who we are!

But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. ~ Romans 5:8 (NKJV)

But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: (John 1:12 NKJV)

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. ~ John 3:16 (NKJV)

Take that leap of faith, repent and believe in the Gospel! Bring Jesus Christ into your life! You won’t regret it! Do it today!
